Visual Communication Department of The New College is unique in many ways. This department has produced many cinema Directors and Asst. Directors, Cinematographers, Movie Editors, Television Program Producers, Anchors, News Presenters, Editors, Advertisement & Fashion Photographers, Media Celebrities like DJs, VJs, RJs, Models, Multimedia Specialist, Computer Graphic Designers, 3-D Animators, Web Designers etc in the last 15 years.

Our Vis.Com. Department has the state of the art Multimedia and Animation Laboratory with high end Apple Mac Systems loaded with all latest software in Multimedia, 3-D Animation and Computer Graphics. There are well equipped laboratories for Photography, Television Production, Exclusive Edit Suites and a well furnished Preview Theatre.

Students get hands on training in all the above mentioned practical subjects by academic and field experts.

In the autonomous stream a completely revamped syllabus dealing with the present requirement of  related media industries is in place. Since more importance is given to practical training there are more practical subjects and only few important theoretical subjects. We have Advanced Photography, Television Production, Film Appreciation, Art Appreciation, Short Film and Advertisement Film Making, Multimedia, 3-D Animation as very interesting and absorbing practical subjects backed by sound theoretical and practical knowledge.

Majority of the  students of our department get placed in their final year or immediately on completion of their graduation. Many students go on to do their Post Graduation in Media Studies and Management.

This department was a Post Graduate Department from 2006 to 2009. The department is planning to upgrade itself again to a Post Graduate Department from the academic year 2013-2014 and awaiting approval from Madras University.
